On Coal River is about the grassroots effort in a small community in West Virginia to restore environmental justice after being ravaged by Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining. I met the filmmakers and people in the documentary when I visited the Coal River Valley in 2005 to protest MTR and became forever connected to this region and its struggle.
Please feel free to forward this e-mail to whomever you think may be interested. Here is a link to the movie trailer, too: http://vimeo.com/oncoalriver/trailer
Each crew builds their own 'dude' that they use all week in competitions:
* Monday, Nov 7th is a Dude Beauty Pageant
All is finished on Thursday Night, Nov. 10th with a BIG BONFIRE!. This will be in the back parking lot of NELA, starting at 6:30. Each crew will perform a skit, song, dance or interesting activity, followed by throwing their Dude on the fire for burning.
We would like all families to come to these activities, especially the BONFIRE, to share in the community spirit of Northpoint.

We have some very important testing next week for AIMS. As you know it is a requirement in Arizona to pass it in three areas, Reading, Writing, and Math in order to graduate. If your son or daughter must take it they have received an e-mail to that effect. Would you please check with them as to whether or no they need to take it. If they do please encourage them to do so. If they want to improve their score from meets to exceeds they may do so. All they have to do to do that is show up for the test. If you have questions about the test please send me an e-mail or give me a call.
The testing begins at 8:45 in the cafeteria. The writing test is Tuesday, the reading Wednesday, and the Math Thursday.
This is a reminder that next week, October 25-27th, the freshmen will be in Flagstaff conducting fieldwork for their Spheres of Influence learning expedition.
Please return the permission slips to Ms. Stefanski as soon as possible. A reminder that if your son/daughter needs to take medication while on fieldwork, we need you to complete the "Authorization to Administer Medication" form. Your son/daughter has received this form from Ms. Stefanski.
Second, we are in need for two parents to accompany the freshmen teachers and students on fieldwork. We can promise you great memories and comfortable lodging for your time. Please let Katie Stefanski know if you are able to join us next Tuesday, Oct. 25- Thursday, Oct. 27th.
Finally, I know that with this being our first fieldwork experience, many students and families are a bit uneasy. Please feel free to address questions to me regarding the fieldwork. We will be spending time in Freshmen Seminar preparing for this trip as well.
Many, many thanks!

More information in the girls ERAU event:
We are so very pleased to be inviting your school to our event, Girls Rock-it in Science Career Day @ ERAU! The Embry-Riddle Diversity Committee would like to extend an invitation for up to twenty (20) of your female High School students to attend this event on Tuesday, October 18th, beginning at 9:00 am and finishing with dinner at 6:00 pm.
This event is different than the events in years past as we are now making it more of a college experience for the students. We are including more hands on experiences and will end our day with dinner in the dining hall on campus. We have taken suggestions over the past few years and are very excited to have tailored this day more for the students!
Participating students will visit several campus facilities, including the flight-line while learning about science and technology related career possibilities. Many of our current female students will be involved throughout the day mentoring your students. Tours will include: Wind Tunnel, Aviation Simulation Lab, Flight Line, Air Traffic Control Lab, Global Security and Intelligence Studies Eagle Operations Center, Aerospace Experimentation and Fabrication Facilities. This day will also include a hands on activity where they will be building and flying a rocket!
We will be meeting in the Student Union – Hangar at 9 am. Signs will be posted on campus to direct you there. This is a FREE event and lunch and dinner will be provided for your young women. Students will have the opportunity to visit with our current female students who come from diverse backgrounds and are engaged in degree programs that will lead them to challenging and rewarding careers.
The suggested selection criteria for the young women that you select to attend are those who have strong math and science skills or have the potential to succeed in technical career fields such as aviation, engineering, aerospace, meteorology or global security.
We hope that you will support this effort to introduce and motivate promising young women to pursue post-secondary education that will lead to challenging and rewarding careers.
This event is an option open to NELA Junior & Senior Girls. If it is something you think you want to do, sign up Monday after break in the counseling office.
Please make note of some important date and time changes to our Girls Rock-it in Science, Career Day @ ERAU event.
The event was scheduled to be on Friday, September 30th but our Diversity Committee was not aware that some local schools do not have school on Friday’s. Since becoming aware of this, we have decided to change our event to be on Tuesday, October 18th. Please note that this event is a free event and your students will be fed lunch and dinner. It is a wonderful day to expose young women to the STEM – science, technology, engineering and math - related fields and also this day gives them a chance to experience what a “day at college” would be like. This event is sponsored by the ERAU Prescott Campus Diversity Committee and is intended as a community outreach event to expose young women to typically non-traditional career choices and empower them with more information enabling them to make more informed educational decisions for themselves – be it at ERAU or otherwise. The event is meant to be for career exploration and fun.
We hope that you will consider bringing up to 15 of your young ladies to join us for our Girls Rock-it in Science, Career Day @ ERAU on Tuesday, October 18th from 9 am – 6:30 pm. Our day will end in the campus dining hall for dinner at about 6. The girls should be done any time after 6:30. Please note that ERAU will be not be providing transportation to and from our campus for this event.
Again, we hope that you will be able to join us. Please send me a list of your students and their chaperones names by October 6th.
As we move toward Fall Break (no school next week) I want to thank each of you for your support and communication. We continue to have high attendance rates, exceptional students and an incredible learning community. We are currently wait-listed at 3 of 4 grade levels. We also have about 20 applicants for next years 9th grade already (if you know an 8th grader that is interested, urge them to hurry!)
Events such as the Freshman Open House, Junior Info Night and Senior College Night reassure me that we are all a part of the CREW that is working together to help your child succeed in academics and in life.
Some of you have become interested in the relationship between Expeditionary Learning and Northpoint. I think the following two links will help you to see that more clearly.
Please take a look at these and feel free to send any questions you may have.
